Spirit Airlines may not have the best reputation–and there are a number of reasons why as detailed in our Spirit Airlines review. In my experience, one of those reasons is that it sold in-flight WiFi for flight routes that do not have, well, in-flight WiFi. I thought I was well-prepared when I pre-purchased my WiFi before my flight. But to my surprise, WiFi was not available on my flight to or from Orlando. However, also to my surprise was how easy it was to get a refund on Spirit Airlines WiFi. In fact, the whole process took less than three minutes.
Here’s how to get refunded for WiFi on Spirit Airlines in three steps:
1. Locate Your WiFi Receipt
To start, you’ll need to locate your Spirit Airlines WiFI receipt. You should have received a confirmation of your WiFi purchase via email, so check there. If you’re not finding it easily, try searching your inbox for “InFlyt” as its Spirit’s snazzy little term for in-flight WiFi–even though it seems it wasn’t snazzy enough to actually work in-flight.
You’ll need your receipt because Spirit will ask for your receipt number as well as some other information related to your flight, such as your flight number and date of flight(s).
2. Go to Spirit’s WiFi Refund Form
With your WiFi receipt and flight information in hand, the next step is to go to Spirit’s WiFi refund form. This is how to request a WiFi refund with Spirit. And even if you’re someone who prefers to call, this is the superior method as you won’t be stuck waiting on hold to speak with a customer service rep (who will then proceed to complete this form).
3. Complete the Form
To submit your WiFi refund request, complete all required fields on the Spirit WiFi refund form. This includes the following information:
- Your email address
- First and last name
- WiFi receipt number
- WiFi purchase type (pre-purchase or purchased onboard)
- Flight number
- Date of departure
- Origin city
- Destination city
- WiFi reason (must select from the dropdown list)
Not sure if your reason qualifies? Here are the refund request reasons: WiFi unavailable on flight (my reason), WiFi available on flight but not able to connect, WiFi lost signal during flight, WiFi was too slow, or WiFi payment processing issues.
What Happens After Submitting Your WiFi Refund Request to Spirit
After submitting your completed WiFi refund form, you will receive an email from Spirit notifying you that your refund has been processed. I received mine almost instantly (ok, maybe within 60 seconds). This confirmation notes that it will take three to seven days for your funds to be returned to your original form of payment. In my case, it took about 2 days for the refund to appear as a credit on my credit card account.
Here’s what happens after submitting the Spirit WiFi Refund Form:
1. You Will Receive a Refund Request Confirmation Email
After hitting submit on the WiFi refund form, you will receive an email to confirm that your request has been received. In some cases, like mine, this initial confirmation email said that my request was approved. I’m guessing this is because my request was due to unavailable in-flight WiFi, which was easily determined to be accurate.
2. You Will Receive a Refund Processed Email
If your refund request was approved, you will receive an email notifying you that your refund has been processed. However, this does not mean that the funds will be returned to your original form of payment just yet. Spirit has started the refund process, but it will take a few days for it to appear in your account.
3. Your Funds Will Return to Your Original Payment In 3 to 7 Days
In the following days, keep an eye out for the refund to post to your original form of payment. In my case, I submitted my WiFi return request on May 25. And on May 27 the funds were posted to my Capital One credit card account. This was surprisingly fast as Spirit says it will post in three to seven days.
If it’s been over a week since you received the email notifying you that your refund has been processed, and you still don’t see the funds returned to your original form of payment, reach out to Spirit to see what’s going on.
Bottom Line
Spirit Airlines makes it very easy to get a refund on a WiFi purchase gone wrong. While it’s odd to me that it will sell WiFi to passengers on routes that don’t offer WiFi, I am happy that the process of getting a refund was really easy–and fast. In my experience, it’s the best process I’ve seen yet. For example, usually, if you have an issue with onboard WiFi you’ll be stuck calling the airline’s customer service line, which usually involves long wait times and the need to make your case.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Who qualifies for a WiFi refund on Spirit?
To submit a WiFi request with Spirit, your reason must fall into one of the following:
- WiFi was unavailable on my flight
- WiFi was available on my flight but I was not able to connect to it
- WiFi lost signal during my flight
- WiFi was too slow
- WiFi payment processing issues
Keep in mind that while these are the options, there is no guarantee that you will get a refund. For example, if you pre-purchased WiFi
Are there any airlines that offer free WiFi?
While in-flight WiFi is becoming more common, it’s still not commonly free. However, there are a few airlines that offer in-flight WiFi for free. These include JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and Norwegian Airlines. However, not all are created equal so check out our full guide to airlines with free WiFi for more insight.
Is Spirit really as cheap as it claims to be?
Spirit is considered a budget airline, but one of the main points of contention with passengers is that Spirit is never as cheap as it first appears. This is because it has a la carte pricing where everything costs extra–even carry-on luggage. So by the time you add luggage and choose a seat, it often costs similar to any of the other major U.S. airlines, like Southwest or American Airlines.
Why does Spirit Airlines have such a bad reputation?
Many consider Spirit to be a bad airline and there are a few reasons for that. First, its advertising pricing never works out. By the time you get to the checkout page, the cost of your flight will likely be way more than what it initially said it would be due to all the add-ons. For example, a carry-on luggage bag currently costs $67 for a flight between Boston and Orlando–each way (or an additional $134 roundtrip).
On top of that, it does not offer in-flight entertainment or any sort of drinks or snacks for free. Even water onboard will cost you $5 for a bottle of Dasani.
For example, I found a flight from Manchester, NH (MHT) to Orlando International (MCO) in July for $115 roundtrip. To add a checked bag and seat selection, the total price over doubled to $270. And that still doesn’t include carry-on luggage. You do get a free carry-on bag, but to qualify it must fit under the seat in front of you. If not, it’s an extra $69 each way. Of course, if you want in-flight WiFi that’s another $8.99 each way and any drinks or snacks will cost extra too (even water is $5).
